How to Design a Safer Shift Schedule

You cannot make shift work risk-free. Night work, early starts, and long hours carry health and safety costs that no roster erases. What a scheduler can change is the size of those costs, and the evidence points to three settings that do most of the work: the rest gap between shifts, the number of night shifts worked in a row, and the length of each shift.

Lever two: no more than three night shifts in a row
Consecutive nights accumulate sleep debt, and the risk does not rise evenly across them.
